Spring/Summer 2002

Introduction

Spring is around the corner, and with it comes our first beta release of Version 4. We are all very excited. RoadEng and Terrain Tools Version 4 has been in development for more than two years and it is a significant step forward. Further in this newsletter you will find a preview of features you can look forward to in Version 4.

Although product development and support is always given a high priority at Softree, the last few months have also been busy with marketing and training. Jack has been very busy training this fall. In addition to a teaching courses in Western Canada and the US, Jack returned to Bogor, Indonesia to carry out training with Art Klassen of TFF.

New product sales have been strong this fall despite the slow B.C. economy. Recently we have completed sales in Malaysia, Indonesia, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Mexico, England, India, Australia, Scotland and Venezuela as our international business continues to grow.

On the trade show circuit we have been busy "pedaling our wares (softwares)" at various conferences, including the NACE (National Association of County Engineers) in Minnesota, the CIF conference at Whistler, the B.C. Woodlot Owners Conference in Campbell River, and the Western Silvaculture Conference in Nanaimo. This Spring we will be exhibiting at the New Zealand Forest Industries 2002 in Rotorua NZ, and in May we will be presenting a paper at the Transport Forestier conference in Trois Rivieres Quebec.

Why is RoadEng different from " HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems?

We are often asked what distinguishes RoadEng from so-called big name civil/survey CAD add-on products ("HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems). The answer, as our customers have frequently told us, is that RoadEng is easier to use and better to design with.

For those unfamiliar with RoadEng, the above comment often generates skepticism. To backup our claim, and arm ourselves with some marketing ammunition we decided to have a closer look at "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems. With open minds, we sat through presentations of the two best known of these systems. The demonstrations, given by experienced users, were enlightening.

"HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems are complex. These products require that you first master the underlying CAD software, then you must learn hundreds of commands and procedures (most of which are tricky and unforgiving). It would take me several months working with these programs before I could do any real work. Not only is "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" difficult to learn, it is awkward to design with. To use "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems you must follow a specific set of steps, i.e. create a DTM, define a horizontal alignment, cut cross sections, define and assign templates, define the vertical alignment and calculate volumes. If you want to make a design change to one of the initial steps you must re-do all the subsequent steps. This is painfully slow.

If you know in advance exactly where your road should be located, "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" systems will help you create a drawing. However, if you have real engineering design work to do, such as evaluating different alignments, templates, earthwork costs, or drainage structures you're better off with RoadEng.

For those of you who haven't used RoadEng you are probably thinking how can this be? "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" company has plenty of resources and certainly many good software engineers. How can a small company, like Softree, develop a better product? The answer is that "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" is intended for general purpose drafting and can be applied to anything from mechanical widgets to printed circuit boards. Despite all the options, features, bells and whistles that are included, "HUMUNGOUS-CAD" remains a clumsy tool for road design. RoadEng on the other hand is focussed; it is quick, easy and interactive. It provides the designer with immediate visual feedback as he designs. When the design is complete, RoadEng can produce quality drawings or export to CAD for the drafting.

Welcome USDA Region II

Softree welcomes the USDA Region II to our RoadEng user group. Softree now has more than 300 RoadEng licenses installed in the USDA including Region I (Northern), Region II (Rocky Mountain), Region III (Southwestern), Region IV (Intermountain), Region V (Pacific Southwest), Region VI (Pacific Northwest), Region VIII (Southern), Region IX (Eastern) and Region X (Alaska). We are obviously very pleased to be doing business with the USDA, and will be working very hard to ensure our products continue to meet their needs.

Terrain Tools Standard / Digitizer Bundle

We are now bundling Terrain Tools Standard Edition with a 12x12 or 12x18 Summasketch III digitizers. This combination makes a great tool for quick calculation of areas and lengths from maps or air photos. For more information contact Wendy Hellofs at (604-519-6222 or whellofs@softree.com).

Tip: How to exclude regions (holes) when doing area calculations

This tip applies to all versions of Terrain Tools (including the freeware version).

The Status Window in Terrain will display the total area of all features in a file. By default, the area of each feature is included (added). However, using the Edit | Modify Selected Features | Properties menu you can set the Negative Area property of a feature. With this property set the area is negative and is thus subtracted from the total.

Road Administration and Tracking

This fall Softree has been working with Forsite Consultants of Salmon Arm to promote FORTRAK and FORCOST, their Road Management software. Several road trips to Washington and discussions with the Washington DNR about their RMAP (road maintenance and abandonment plans) requirements has resulted in a new road management product ROADTRAK.

ROADTRAK is designed to streamline and standardize the tracking of resource information associated with roads, harvest areas, and drainage structures.

The USDA San Dimas Research Center in California is also reviewing ROADTRAK.

For more information please contact Jack Rimac at 604-519-6222.

Demo Mode Windows 2000, NT and XP

Our number one support question recently has been

I have just updated our computer operating system and when I run Softree I get a message "you are running in demonstration mode".

This problem is almost always because the Rainbow security drivers have not been installed correctly. Here is how to resolve the problem.

1) Make sure security key is attached to the computer

2) Go to Windows Explorer

3) Select RoadEng directory

4) Double click on Drivers

5)

For Windows 98 or 95
Click on WIN_9x
Double click on sentw9x.exe

For Windows NT, 2000 or XP
Click on Win_nt
Double click on setupx86.exe

6) Rainbow Technology window will appear

7) Select functions

8) Select install sentinel driver

9) Reboot when completed.

Version 4 Preview

Here is a quick look at some of the new features.
  • Support for long file names.
  • Full support for UTM and other coordinate systems.
  • Chainage equations.
  • Station reference by index.
  • Survey adjustment history.
  • Culvert editing using the mouse.
  • Read/write for ArcView® Shape files.
  • Enhanced export to AutoCAD® including read DWG read and write.
  • Import of USGS DEM data.

Tip: Location Bridges are Customizable

You can create your own Bridge templates by setting the Disable Cut/Fill check box in the Template editor. This template will behave like the old BR template except that you choose the width so that Plan display is more meaningful. If you set surfacing depths (with large fill slopes), you will also get a more meaningful Section display. Finally, note that you can display bridge abutments (called Bridge Symbols) in both the Plan and Profile windows.
