LIDAR Data Management

LiDAR (Light Direction And Ranging) surveys produce very large amounts of relatively accurate three dimensional point data. The data include points representing laser light scattered from the ground (bare earth), foliage, buildings, transmission lines and other objects. Most LiDAR surveyors will process the data into two or more categories (bare earth and one or more others).

In this example you will use the Terrain module:

  • Read in a large LiDAR data set.
  • Read in two-dimensional features (roads, rivers, boundaries).
  • Trim the LiDAR data set to an area of interest.
  • Generate a TIN surface and contours.
  • View the surface in 3D.
  • Drape the features on the 3D surface.
