The following example illustrates the use of RoadEng for earthwork estimates on a culvert and fill removal job which is part of a larger road decommissioning project.

Survey Entry

A short P-line survey is taken across the road (perpendicular to the road centerline) from the intake of the culvert to the outlet. Cross section shots were also included parallel to the road at centerline, road edges and toe of the fill. The picture below illustrates the orientation of the survey with respect to the road and culvert.

Earthwork Calculations

The Location module was used to determine earthwork quantities as follows.

First, the designed profile was set to the bottom of the culvert.

 A template was created with suitable cut slopes (in this case 1.5:1) and applied to the length of culvert.

 Volumes were calculated and tabulated for contract purposes using Microsoft Excel^.
