Zooming and panning with the middle mouse wheel is very useful.  Once you are familiar with zooming and panning using the middle mouse wheel, you will find working with RoadEng or Terrain Tools much easier.  

Here is how it works.   

1. Start Terrain (Location and Survey/Map are similar) and open a file (one of the samples shipped with the system will do).   

2. Activate the Plan window and move the mouse cursor into the center of the screen. 

3. Press down the middle mouse wheel without spinning it and drag the mouse across the window.  Notice how the window scrolls.  Release the middle mouse button to end the scroll operation.

4.  Now try spinning the mouse wheel.  Note that spinning forward and backward zooms in and zooms out.
